What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is a CELEBRATION! It commemorates the day Union soldiers informed those living in Galveston, Texas that the war had ended and slaves were free. Sadly, this occurred two years after Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Nevertheless, our people CELEBRATED with great jubilee the promise of FREEDOM.

Juneteenth is a CELEBRATION of the tenacity and perseverance of black people. We broke every chain designed to break and bind us. They had our bodies but never our minds, hearts and souls-those were never theirs to be had, kept and locked away.

Juneteenth is a CELEBRATION for black people just as the Fourth of July is a celebration for white people. In all honesty, Juneteenth is a CELEBRATION for everyone who has benefited from the hard work of black men and women throughout the history of this country.

Though our ancestors EARNED, what should have always been theirs, freedom we are still fighting the good fight. Take some time today to reflect on how far we've come and how much further we have to go to break free of bondage, oppression and trauma.

On this Juneteenth CELEBRATE! TEACH! REACH! GUIDE! SUPPORT!
